Né à Birmingham, Angleterre, en 1940. Il a fait ses études à l'Université de Leeds (1958-61) et à Wolverhampton (1962-66). Il a enseigné la céramique à Rochdale, Cardiff, Sheffield et à l'Ecole des arts d'Edinbourg où il est actuellement doyen et professeur d'arts appliqués. Il est membre de l'Académie internationale de la céramique depuis 1970, conseiller auprès du Comité de conseil des arts écossais depuis 1994, membre fondateur de l'Association des arts appliqués de l'Ecole des beaux-arts de Banff, Canada, depuis 1985; Keramisch Werkcentrum, Pays-Bas depuis 1987. Ses œuvres figurent dans des collections privées et publiques de plusieurs pays.

Le travail actuel continue à développer les thèmes des expositions récentes. La profondeur du temps, la lenteur du changement, le renouvellement constant et le rapport fondamental entre la géologie et le paysage.

Le travail prend la forme de bols, plats et tasses lourds, chacun contenant des références à des endroits particuliers de l'Ecosse. En mélangeant à l'argile une sélection de mousses, feuilles, bois ou écorces de pins et d'autres éléments, l'objet établit un lien physique. Ensuite les références à la structure et à la géologie du site sont obtenues en érodant l'objet sorti du four, par jet de sable, découpe ou affutage. La surface terminée de l'objet essaie de rendre le climat, l'atmosphère et l'humeur changeante de l'endroit, à travers la couleur, l'émail, le lissage ou le polissage. Le travail essaie de transmettre ces expériences complexes par les formes les plus simples.

Current work develops the theme pursued in recent exhibitions; deep time, slow shift, constant renewal and the fundamental relationship between geology and landscape. The work takes the form of heavy bowls, dishes and cups, each containing references to a particular location in Scotland. By mixing with the bone china clay a selection of mosses, leaves, pine chips and other fragments from that location, the work establishes a physical link. References are subsequently made to the structure and geology of the site by eroding the fired vessel through sandblasting, grinding and cutting. The final surface of the work attempts to capture the climate, atmosphere and changing mood of the location through colour, glazing, burnishing or polishing. The work attempts to contain these complex experiences in the simplest vessel forms.
