Ο Δημοσθένης Κοκκινίδης γεννήθηκε στον Πειραιά το 1929.

Το 1952 εγκαταλείπει τις σπουδές στην τότε Ανωτάτη Σχολή Οικονομικών Επιστημών και φοιτά στην Ανωτάτη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών της Αθήνας ως το 1958.

Από το 1959 έως το 1961 είναι υπεύθυνος του καλλιτεχνικού τμήματος του νεοϊδρυθέντος Οργανισμού Ελληνικής Χειροτεχνίας και βοηθά στον σχεδιαστικό και μορφολογικό προσανατολισμό της λαϊκής παραγωγής και βιοτεχνίας, ύστερα από σύντoμη μετεκπαίδευση στην Ιταλία. Μέχρι το 1976, παράλληλλα με την ζωγραφική, καλύπτει τις βιοποριστικές του ανάγκες με τις εφαρμογές της τέχνης. Το 1976 εκλέγεται τακτικός καθηγητής στην Α.Σ.Κ.Τ.

Υπήρξε ιδρυτικό μέλος της "Ομάδας τέχνης α" (1961-1967) της οποίας βασική επιδίωξη ήταν να φέρει κοντά στη μοντέρνα τέχνη το ευρύτερο κοινό των αστικών κέντρων της χώρας. Αργότερα γίνεται ιδρυτικό μέλος της "Ομάδας για την επικοινωνία και την εκπαίδευση στην τέχνή" (1976-1981) με παρόμοιες επιδιώξεις. Τη χρονιά της μεταπολίτευοης (1974) είναι μέλος του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου του Ιδρύματος Κρατικών Υποτροφιών Εκλέγεται πρύτανης στην Α.Σ.Κ.Τ. από το 1979 έως το 1981.

Υπήρξε μέλος του Δ.Σ. του Εθνικού Θεάτρου Αθηνών (1981-1983) και του νεόϊδρυθέντος Δ.Ι.Κ.Α.Τ.Σ.Α.

Από το 1996 είναι μέλος του Δ.Σ. του Μορφωτικού Ιδρύματος Εθνικής Τράπεζας και από το 1997 είναι μέλος του Δ.Σ. της Εταιρείας Σπουδών Νεοελληνικού Πολιτισμού.

Πρόεδρος κριτικής επιτροπής στο διαγωνισμό (2002/2003) για την αισθητική παρουσίαση των σταθμών του ΜΕΤΡΟ με έργα ελλήνων καλλιτεχνών.

Dimosthenls Kokkinidis was born in Piraeus in 1929.

In 1952 he abandoned his studies at what was then the School of Economic Sciences and became a student at the Athens School of Fine Arts until 1958.

From 1959 to 1961 he was in charge of the art section of the newly-established Hellenic Handicrafts Organisation and assisted in the design and morphological orientation of folk production and craft industry, after a short period of training in Italy. Up to 1976, in parallel with painting, he made his living with applications of art. In 1976, he was elected full professor at the Athens School of Fine Arts.

He was a founder member of the 'a' Art Group (1961-1967), whose basic aim was to bring the general public of the country's urban centres closer to modern art. Later he was also a founder member of the 'Group for Communication and Education in Art' (1976-1981), which had similar aims. In the year of the restoration of democracy (1974), he was a member of the Board of Management of the State Scholarships Foundation. He was elected Rector at the School of Fιne Arts in 1979 and held the post until 1981.

He has been a member of the Board of the Athens National Theatre (1981-1983) and of the newly-established Inter-University Centre for the Recognition of Foreign Academic Qualifications. Since 1996, he has been a member of the Board of the Cultural Foundation of the National Bank, and since 1997 has served on the Board of the Society for Studies in Modern Greek Culture.

He was President of the evaluation committee in the competition (2002-2003) for the decoration of the stations of the Athens Underground (Metro) with works by Greek artists.
