Jean-Luc Mello est né en 1943, la pire année d'une guerre terrible. Fils d'un boulanger (il mangea bien) et d'une couturière (il fut bien vêtu) il passa sa première enfance à Nyon, en Suisse, sous aucune bombe. Il échappa au dur labeur de nuit que lui réservait son père en fuyant dans les études les moins immédiatement utiles: la sociologie. Étudiant pour lire la société et ne surtout pas devenir "sociologue", il ne se sépare pas de ses pinceaux pour peindre ce qu'il ne peut analyser. Il sera (comme on dit d'un écrivain romantique quand on parle de son gagne pain) ouvrier du bâtiment, animateur d'un foyer de délinquants, docker en Italie (son origine), imprimeur, syndicaliste, alphabétiseur en Afrique,

consultant d'organisations malades du foi, professeur d'École d'art. Tout ce qui n'a rien à voir avec son art mais qui pourtant le fonde. Écrire pour ne pas devenir "écrivain", peindre pour ne pas devenir "peintre", Cela depuis l'âge de 18 ans, lorsqu'il composait les meilleures rédactions pour palier ses déficiences en orthographe et qu'il posa nu dans un atelier, pour une grande toile : "le christ aux outrages", œuvre malheureusement disparue. Il expose par amitié, privilégiant l'expérience simple: rencontrer de l'humain qui peut "voir" sans besoin d'inquisition sur la personne, qui peut "voir" sans "penser voir". Jean-Luc Mello n'est pas encore mort au Viet Nam, en écrivant les poèmes de l'au-delà, avec, pour linceul, la toile d'une jeune fille nue.
