Reversal of Fortune
Dig into the psyche of most New Zealanders and you will find an insecurity that can be traced to our origin as Europeans transplanted into a South Pacific. We are unsettled by this land clothed in primeval rainforest, pocked with volcanos, shaken by earthquakes and pounded by the sea. Ever since the first settlers arrived in the 1840s we have been modifying it to fit some European model in the hope of regaining our equilibrium. Being neither Polynesian nor European has lead to a national identity crisis and a willingness to adopt change in the hope that some national characteristic will miraculously appear for us to adopt as "our" culture.

We still defer to the British courts, and the English Queen is head of state. We blithely import fashions and follow fads espoused by overseas "experts" that have led to wrenching changes in society and commerce and impoverished the nation. Despite the reality of massive debt, a rising current account deficit and falling income, most New Zealanders cling to the fantasy that their "clean green" land is the envy of the world!

These photographs are my exasperated reaction against such self deception and the cant espoused by business and the National government based on doctrinaire beliefs that economic salvation can be achieved by leaving everything to private enterprise operating on a "level playing field". Thankfully, in November 1999 we chose a new government to bring a dose of realism to those who still believe in the "clean green" paradise!

Si vous plongez dans le psychisme de la plupart des Néo-Zélandais, vous trouverez une insécurité qu'on peut faire remonter à notre origine d'Européens transplantés dans le Pacifique Sud. Nous sommes troublées par cette terre immergée dans la dense forêt équatoriale primitive, piégée par des volcans, ébranlée par des tremblements de terre et battue par la mer. Dès l'arrivée des premiers immigrants dans les années 1840, nous n'avons cessée de tenter de la modifier pour la faire ressembler à quelque modèle européen dans l'espoir de retrouver notre équilibre. Le fait de n'être ni des Polynésiens ni des Européens nous a conduits à une crise d'identité et à une farouche volonté de changement dans l'espoir que quelque caractéristique nationale surgirait miraculeusement que nous pourrions adopter comme étant "notre" culture. Nous continuons de recourir aux tribunaux britanniques et la Reine d'Angleterre est le Chef de l'Etat. Nous importons allègrement les modes et suivons les lubies adoptées par des "experts" du bout du monde, ce qui, en modifiant artificiellement notre société et notre commerce, a conduit à l'appauvrissement de notre nation. En dépit d'une dette énorme, d'un déficit budgétaire croissant et d'un revenu en chute libre, la plupart des néo-zélandais s'accrochent à l'idée absurde que leur terre "vert gazon" fait l'envie du monde entier! Ces photographies expriment ma réaction exaspérée à cette duperie auto-entretenue et à l'orientation prise par les milieux d'affaires et le gouvernement du pays, sur la base d'une croyance doctrinaire que le salut économique peut être atteint en abandonnant tout à l'entreprise privée opérant sur un "terrain d'égalité" . Heureusement, en novembre 1999, nous avons choisi un nouveau gouvernement pour apporter une dose de réalisme à ceux qui croient encore au "paradis vert"
