Cossmann’s op. 17, this ex-libris was for the private library – ‘Handbibliothek’ in German, which explains the choice of image – of Archduke Eugen (1863-1954), fourth son of Archduke Karl Ferdinand. Cossmann later made an ex-libris for Archduke Eugen’s music library, and another for his archive of maps.
4f/12. Emil Doeppler (D, 1855-1922) KAISER WILHELM II, P5, 118 x 90, 1896. Viz L-W p. 364, 449, 451.

4f/13. Josef Sattler (D, 1867-1931) VICTORIA, KöNIGIN VON PREUSSEN, P7, 93 x 73, 1897. Viz LBRB, p. 173 ill.

The eldest daughter of Queen Victoria, Victoria Adelaide Marie Louisa (1840-1901) married Emperor Friedrich III of Prussia. There is a smaller size of this plate, 65 x 52.
4f/14. Fritz Endell (D, 1873- 1955) WILHELM II, KöNIG VON WURTTEMBERG., P7, 88 x 77, c.1900.

The son of Prince Friedrich Karl August, Wilhelm II (1848-1921) reigned from 1891 to 1918, when he renounced the throne and took the title of Duke of Wurttemberg. An uncommon plate, for his private library.

4f/15. Karl Erik Forsberg (S,*1914) CARL XVI GUSTAV, REX SUET., P5, 100 x 83, 1984. Viz. BPSJ Vol. 3, No. 2, p. 91.

Carl XVI Gustav (*1946), only son of Prince Gustav Adolf, became King of Sweden in 1973, succeeding his grandfather Gustav VI Adolf.
4f/16. ? Herbert Wauthier (GB) HAILE SELASSIE I, IMP. ETHIOP., C2, 97 x 75, c.1920.

Hailé Selassié (1892-1975), the ‘King of Kings’, was Emperor of Ethiopia from 1930 to 1974. Wauthier made two ex-libris for him, of which the text in Amharic reads Tafari Makonnen, hereditary Prince of the Kingdom of Ethiopia, and on the throne, in classical Ethiopic The Lion of the Tribe of Judah has prevailed. The Emperor was the spiritual father of the Organisation of African States.

4f/17. Fernand James Junod (CH, 1872-1953) ANANDA, REX THAIL., C2, 72 x 52, c.1920.

This plate was made when His Majesty Ananda Mahidol (1925- 1946), King of Siam, was a student in Lausanne. He gave precise instructions to the artist as to the composition of the ex-libris.
4f/18. J. A. C. Harrison (GB, 1872-1955) ALBERT, PRINCE OF WALES, C1, 67 x 49, 1904. Viz. LBRB # 99.

Signed ‘W.P.B.’ (see 4h/18) but superbly engraved by J. A. C. Harrison, this plate was made for Prince Albert (later King George VI) when he was nine years of age. This is the second state of the plate, as the coronet in the first was incorrect.

4f/19. Stephen Gooden (GB, 1892-1955) KING GEORGE VI, C2, 153 x 89, 1937. Viz BNL # 188, LBRB # 104.

One of the seven ex-libris executed by the great master Gooden for the British Royal family, for the Royal Library at Windsor Castle. Originally, it was designed with Edward VIII’s cypher, before his abdication, and was then modified and two other plates of different sizes were made in 1937. Later, the cypher was removed for use by Queen Elizabeth II.
4f/20. Will Carter (GB *1912) QUEEN ELIZABETH II, X2, 48 x 38, c.1958.

A simple, but beautiful calligraphic label, which Queen Elizabeth II uses for her private library, and which was a gift to Her Majesty from Sir Owen Morshead. It contrasts greatly with the ‘official’ Windsor library ex-libris, and was printed in a wide range of colours.
