4 EX-LIBRIS: A THEMATIC APPROACH It is obvious from the preceding sections that ex-libris, especially from the 18th century until now, show an infinite variety of subjects. Thus their subdivision by themes can be carried out according to the tastes and interests of collectors, and such selections must inevitably be arbitrary. It was however decided here to present a few themes of wide interest, some of which span the whole history of ex-libris, and others which relate to the more modern period. None of the following sections in any way attempt to be exhaustive< on the contrary, they contain a sampling of what the curator considered to be the finest examples available within the chosen theme. By their common thematics, these ex-libris afford the viewer a point of comparison as to how different artists, at different times, approached a similar subject. It is hoped that this will usefully complement the more chrono-logical-historical approach of preceding sections. |
